The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, a vital water source that draws animals from across the region during the dry season—earning it the nickname “the river of warthogs.” As we journey through the park, you’ll encounter a variety of ecosystems, from open savannah and elephant grass plains to acacia woodlands and verdant groundwater forests. Tarangire is especially famous for its large elephant herds often seen along the riverbanks, as well as sightings of giraffe, bushbuck, and hartebeest. After an early breakfast, you’ll descend into the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders. Formed two to three million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed, the crater now forms a vast, unbroken caldera nearly 600 meters deep. As you make your way down the crater walls, the adventure begins—with sweeping views giving way to open grasslands teeming with wildlife. On the crater floor, you’ll encounter herds of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive black rhino, which may be spotted grazing in the open plains—Ngorongoro offers one of the best chances in Tanzania to see this endangered species. The timing of this natural spectacle varies each year, guided by seasonal rains. After a scenic game drive and picnic or lodge lunch, we’ll head to our luxury tented partner lodges nestled in the heart of the park. There, you’ll enjoy dinner and settle in for a magical overnight stay surrounded by the sounds of the wild. After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ). Upon arrival, you’ll pass through the cultural heart of the island—Stone Town—before continuing to the northern coast to Nungwi, one of Zanzibar’s most captivating beach destinations. (Flight arrangements can be made at an additional cost.) Nungwi is famed for its powdery white coral sands that seem to glow even under moonlight. Despite its lively charm, the area retains a sense of peaceful seclusion. Its long stretch of coastline offers ideal conditions for swimming and snorkeling year-round, thanks to its gentle tides and crystal-clear, reef-rich waters.
