Tour Plan
After breakfast your depart for Udzungwa Mountain National Park (drive of some 6-7 hours), one of the most interesting bio-diversity and unique rainforest areas of East Africa, where many extremely rare plants and animal species have been identified (and indeed continue to be discovered). Among the six types of primates there are two endemic species found nowhere else in the world – the Udzungwa Colobus Monkey and the Sanje Crested Mangabey. You arrive at your camp late evening for a day of walking and bird-watching in the pristine rain forest, hiking towards the Sanje waterfalls for spectacular views of the wide Kilombero Valley. If you wish, you can bath and play around in the pools at the waterfalls.
Today your guide will take you to the Hidden Waterfall Trail taking you to Njokamoni Waterfall, right back into Hondo Hondo. It’s a long, steep walk that climbs to over 1000m, so you should plan to leave early. It is necessary to take a ranger on this hike as there are large mammals deep in the forest. You will certainly see plenty of wildlife on this trail. Once you’ve climbed the sometimes steep trail to the ridge, you walk through the flat grassy bottoms of some beautiful hidden valleys (hence our name for the trail) often frequented by elephants. Overnight at Udzungwa Falls Lodge (Accommodation at en suite rooms) All meals included NB- this is a moderately tough hiking tour which takes some 7-8 hours for some 15 km. If you like a ‘lighter’ version your guide will take you across the road via the friendly local town of Mwaya towards a Rubber Plantation where you can see how local Latex is produced (this excursion can take some 4-5 hours).
Today after breakfast you will drive for 2 hrs to Mikumi National Park further on a full day safari. A day at Mikumi National Park provides a good impression of African safari wildlife and is very well suited for a short visit. There is a rich variety of bird species as well as large numbers of buffaloes and elephants, and a great many giraffe which can be seen traversing the plains with their unique ambling gait. Close to the water holes lions, leopards and hippos can also be found. Other species residing here include zebras, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and other antelopes. Several observation towers enable you to overview the rolling miombo woodland and wide open plains of Mikumi in its entirety – an amazing view.
After breakfast proceed with your safari activities at Mikumi before you return to Dar Es Salaam with arrival in the late afternoon/early evening. In Dar-es-salaam you will be dropped at air port to catch your connection flight or at your lodge. End of service.
