Tour Plan
6:00 AM: Depart from Kampala. The journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is approximately 8-10 hours, covering around 460 kilometres (285 miles). Ensure your vehicle is well-fueled and stocked with snacks and water for the long drive.
9:00 AM: Stop at the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe for a photo opportunity and a brief explanation of the equator’s significance. This is a popular tourist stop with souvenir shops and cafes.
11:00 AM: Continue your journey towards Bwindi, passing through scenic landscapes and local villages.
1:00 PM: Stop for lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara. Enjoy a traditional Ugandan meal and possibly explore the cultural museum briefly.
2:30 PM: Resume your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The road becomes more rugged as you approach the forest, providing a glimpse of the dense vegetation and mountainous terrain.
6:30 PM: Arrive in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
7:00 PM: Check into Ruhija Gorilla Lodge. The lodge offers comfortable accommodation and stunning views of the forest.
7:30 PM: Enjoy dinner at the lodge.
8:30 PM: Relax and prepare for the gorilla trekking experience the next day. Overnight stay at Ruhija Gorilla Lodge.
6:00 AM: Wake up and have an early breakfast. Ensure you are well-prepared with packed lunch, water, rain gear, and sturdy walking shoes.
7:00 AM: Head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and regulations by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
8:00 AM: Begin your gorilla trek. The duration of the trek can vary from 2 to 8 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The trek involves navigating through dense forests, steep hills, and possibly muddy paths.
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM: Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing them. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see these majestic creatures up close in their natural habitat.
1:00 PM: Enjoy your packed lunch in the forest.
2:00 PM: Trek back to the park headquarters where you will receive a certificate for participating in the gorilla trek.
4:00 PM: Return to Ruhija Gorilla Lodge. Relax and freshen up after the long trek.
7:00 PM: Dinner at the lodge.
8:00 PM: Overnight stay at Ruhija Gorilla Lodge.
6:00 AM: Breakfast at the lodge.
6:30 AM: Depart for Lake Mburo National Park. The drive takes approximately 5-6 hours (about 290 km / 180 miles), passing through Kabale and Mbarara towns.
11:30 AM: Arrive at Lake Mburo National Park. Check-in at Rwakobo Rock Lodge, a lodge located at the edge of the park offering great views and comfortable accommodations.
12:30 PM: Lunch at the lodge.
2:30 PM: Embark on an afternoon game drive. Lake Mburo National Park is known for its diverse wildlife, including zebras, impalas, buffaloes, giraffes, and a variety of bird species.
6:00 PM: Return to Rwakobo Rock Lodge. Relax and enjoy the sunset over the park.
7:30 PM: Dinner at the lodge.
8:30 PM: Overnight stay at Rwakobo Rock Lodge.
6:00 AM: Early morning walking safari. Lake Mburo National Park is one of the few parks in Uganda where you can go for a guided walking safari. This offers a unique perspective to see wildlife up close on foot.
8:00 AM: Return to the lodge for breakfast.
9:00 AM: Check out of the lodge and begin your journey back to Kampala.
12:00 PM: Stop for lunch en route, likely in Masaka or along the way at a roadside restaurant.
1:00 PM: Continue your drive back to Kampala. The total drive is about 4-5 hours (240 km / 150 miles).
5:30 PM: Arrive in Kampala by late afternoon or early evening. Drop off at your preferred location.
Additional Tips
Gorilla Trekking Permits: Ensure you have secured your gorilla trekking permits in advance, as they are limited and in high demand.
Packing Essentials: Carry sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, water bottle, binoculars, camera with extra batteries, comfortable and sturdy walking shoes, light clothing for the day, and warm layers for the evening.
Health Precautions: Ensure you have the necessary vaccinations and carry any personal medications. A first-aid kit is also advisable.
Fitness Level: Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. Ensure you are in good health and physically prepared for the trek.
Money: Carry some cash for tips, souvenir purchases, and any extra activities not covered in your package.
Communication: Mobile network coverage can be spotty in some areas. Carry a portable charger and ensure your phone is fully charged before setting out each day.
