History of Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park has a long and interesting history that shows how important the area has always been for nature and wildlife.

In the early 1900s, during the time when Germany ruled Tanzania (then called Tanganyika), the area was recognized for its large number of wild animals. In 1910, the Germans made it a protected area called Saba Game Reserve to stop too much hunting.

After World War II, the British took over the country and in 1946, they changed the name to Rungwa Game Reserve. This helped protect the land and the animals even more.

Later, in 1964, part of this area was made into a national park and given the name Ruaha National Park, named after the Great Ruaha River that runs through it. This river is very important because it brings water to animals and plants all year round.

In 2008, the government added more land from the nearby Usangu Game Reserve and wetlands, making Ruaha the biggest national park in Tanzania. This helped protect even more animals and important water sources.

Today, Ruaha National Park is one of the wildest and most natural parks in Africa. It is still not visited by many tourists, which makes it a quiet place to enjoy nature and see animals like lions, elephants, leopards, wild dogs, giraffes, and many birds.
